It’s been a season of movement, between places, people, and shifting routines.
In the midst of it, we’re paying more attention to the smaller rhythms that shape our days. The moments we return to, almost without thinking, yet quietly grounding us in place.
ROOM is a space where we document these lived moments, thoughts and interactions. A look at snippets of life as it unfolds, watching our pieces lived in, the allowance to be and nuances in between.

In our second edition, we share our ROOM with Yuka Uchikoba, a freelance hair and makeup artist from Tokyo, Japan.
Her work centres around bringing out something new in others. In contrast, her own rhythms are shaped by small, familiar rituals; from coffee, time outdoors, and the spaces she returns to in between.

What do you do for a living, and how are your days shaped?
Yuka: “I work freelance in as a make up and hairstylist, as well as in social media.
Some days I’m out on different job sites, and there are also days where I’m doing desk work from home. Since my schedule changes constantly, it’s become a habit for me to check the next day’s plans every night before going to sleep.

No two days are quite the same."
On what energizes her during her work
“I feel happiest when I’ve finished a look and the client really likes it.
I also find it especially fulfilling when I’m able to bring out a side of someone they haven’t seen before."
There is a quiet satisfaction in that moment when something shifts, and a new version of someone comes alive.

On what rest looks like
As the weather warms, her pace softens.
“I’ve been borrowing books from a nearby library and making time to read in the park.
On days with good weather, I always bring a good cup of coffee with me and spend time slowly sitting on a park bench. It’s a small moment, but it makes me feel very happy.”

When it comes to her personal styling, the details are always key
It's always about the details, and often all it takes is one that brings everything together. Her approach is intuitive, and is shaped more by feeling than by rules.
“I really like eyewear, and it’s something I often add at the end.
It feels like it helps balance the whole look, and somehow gives me a sense of comfort.
I like relaxed, loose styles, but I pay attention to balancing materials and how I add or subtract elements. I don’t really have a fixed rule, but I try not to combine similar textures.
On which colour best represents her
“I’m not sure if it represents me, but if I could choose, I'd like to be pastel yellow.
I see it as a lighthearted, uplifting shade. Almost like spring, and I want to be someone who can make the people around me feel warm and at ease.”

What brings you joy?
“I love music, so I often go to live shows and concerts.
Recently, I’ve been to see XG, iri, and SIRUP.
On what it means to allow herself in life
“A few years ago, my self-esteem had dropped, but I realised that the most important thing was to first acknowledge myself.
I want to live in a way where I can truly feel that I’m okay just as I am.
